CLOUD LUDUM (“ludum” [Latin] – game or play) performs in a style that could be defined as "third stream" – a blend of contemporary classical music with jazz and free improvisation.
The repertoire of the ensemble includes compositions by Bela Bartok, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Leo Brouwer and other XX century classical composers as well as contemporary jazz and third-stream pieces. CLOUD LUDUM experiments a lot with various kinds of improvisation ranging from classical variations to blowing over jazz changes to modal jazz solos to free collective improvisation. Beside perfect blend of the acoustic instruments, ensemble includes electronics, which brings a “film-score” atmospheric component to the music, creating unusual ambient landscapes and musical creatures to accompany acoustic improvisers. The group was formed in 2010 and consists of the finest Berklee, NEC and Boston Conservatory alumni.

Cloud Ludum presents Stockhausen's Zodiac
October 2, 2012 at 9 PM
Admission is FREE
Cloud Ludum will perform Karlheinz Stockhausen’s work “Zodiac”. “Zodiac” is a cycle of 12 tone-row pieces each representing a zodiac sign. Probably it is one of the most popular Stockhausen’s compositions. Originally these pieces were written for music boxes but composer arranged them later for various vocal and instrumental ensembles. Due to this initial “openness” for multiple interpretations the composition presents a very inspiring material for a chamber jazz ensemble.
Performance of “Zodiac” arranged for Cloud Ludum by Olga Karaseva will include different types of improvisation ranging from classical variation and blowing over jazz chanes to riff based solo and free collective improvisation. It will be a non-stop performance, where one theme is leading to another. This format will allow the audience to experience intense emotional and intellectual journey through this XX century avant-garde composition.
